336. Reviving the 200-year-old Grantham Canal
Formed in 1969, the Grantham Canal Society is undertaking the huge task of restoring a 33-mile canal dating from the Industrial Revolution, over 200 years ago. I went up to see how they're getting along.

There are some aspects of the boat's refurbishment that simply can't be achieved (or are difficult to do) while it's in the water so in this video I took the boat from its mooring at Stourport a little way down the river to a wharf where it's been hauled out so that I can work on it on dry land. You wait eight years to do a Dutch barge video then two come along at once... This time, I'm looking at the question of what do you do if you want a custom-designed boat to live on but don't have the budget to buy a new-build? Well, you buy an old but sound boat and tear out the interior for a refit and that's just what Gabs Heneghan has done. In this first episode following her progress, we se...

We have built similar-looking, but of course much larger generators. Without any oil inside. These were sunk in the Donau and generate electricity by means of the current, which turns the generator rotor via the propellers. I've also been on a yacht in the Mediterranean that used inverter-powered electric motors for propulsion. I think it's clever. You just have to make sure that the heat generated is dissipated. Which is not always taken into account. . .
